| PRAYER REQUEST: update on Algerian Christians under pressure |
|
On 2nd April an Algerian believer was formally convicted of proselytising. His sentence was published on 9th April. It is a two year jail sentence plus a fine of 100,000 dinars (approximately US$1,540). Following legal advice, he has decided to appeal against the conviction and sentence.
Greetings in the name of Jesus, head of the Church
On 6th March we reported that an Algerian believer facing a court hearing had been acquitted. Recall that he had been told he would be fined and sent to jail for a year.
Another Algerian believer has been treated differently. On 2nd April he was formally convicted of proselytising. His sentence was published on 9th April. It is a two year jail sentence plus a fine of 100,000 dinars (approximately US$1,540). Following legal advice, he has decided to appeal against the conviction and sentence. The appeal is scheduled to be heard on Saturday 12th April.
The written sentence for three other Algerian believers that was scheduled for publication on 14th February has yet to be published.
Algerian Christians continue to face two further overt pressures; namely an intense media campaign and the enforced closure of fellowships. The latter now affects at least 25 groups.
Algerian Christians thank us for standing with them in prayer. They request our continued prayer that: a. The appeal will be successful and our brother acquitted b. That our three brothers awaiting a written verdict will not be sentenced to jail c. The media attention will have a positive impact on the church, drawing more people to respond to the love and truth of Jesus d. That all closed fellowships will be allowed to reopen e. That all members will find worship and fellowship with others f. All officials involved will hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and respond to His love. |
